What are you worth? In today’s world, it’s often measured by cliché and materialistic things like bank balance, looks and appearances (including being fat or thin), test scores or career and success path.
But, how do we measure our own value? And how do others do the same? That’s what really frightens us. When we hear of destructive incidents like the earthquake in Japan, random shooting in France, kids being caught in a cave in Thailand and the death caused, we instantly think, “That’s terrible.” We’re genuinely sad and horrified because the deaths were a great loss and those lives were worthwhile. We do not think about the passed in terms of their bank balance, looks, or upbringing. We NEVER do. None of that really matters in valuing our worth. Our worth is JUST that WE ARE; not even WHO we are.
Humility is this beautiful quality where we understand that our worth is not dependent on something. Upon understanding this, neither do the things that we do or have make us have an inflated sense of worth, nor do we put ourselves down because we don’t have or cannot do a particular thing. We can see ourselves objectively. We can see what we’re good or bad at, our assets and our faults, or our strengths and our weaknesses. This never interferes with how we feel about WHO WE ARE.
