Running without orthotics or supportive insoles can be a liberating experience. Its lighter, cheaper, it makes life simpler and it really helps when you choose racing flats or lighter and more flexible shoes.
There are however three things that you absolutely must be able to do in order to ditch your orthotics:
1. Have independent big toe and four toe control
2. Have at least 30 degrees of big toe and small toe extension
3. Be able to control your foot mechanics
For most people improving your foot and ankle function will help you to run faster by about 5 to 10 seconds per kilometer of 7 to 15 seconds per mile. So it is well worth your time and effort to gain control of your feet and make them healthy and strong.
