Ugh. Diseases. What are they good for? Absolutely nothing! You get them when the AI storyteller ‘rolls’ them, and they are awful. In this episode of RimWorld SCIENCE!!! we take a closer look at how various factors affect treatment and healing of disease.
Diseases can be broken into three types: Infectious, which can be fatal; and mechanites and parasites (gut worms and muscle parasites), which aren’t. And we ask: How do different factors help?
First, “Immunity Gain Speed” is how fast your colonist gains immunity once they have an infectious disease. This is affected by health, blood filtration, hunger, and goes up if they are rested in a bed — with hospital beds and vitials monitors giving the greatest boost.
But what else matters? Well, there’s TEND QUALITY. This is how ‘good’ a treatment your colonist got last time he or she was tended to. In this episode we see that this is effected by (i) hospital quality (hospital beds and vitals monitors lead to better tend quality), (ii) doctor skill level, and (iii) medicine quality. Level 20 doctors with glitterworld medicine give the BEST tending evah.
What does tend quality DO, though? With infectious diseases, it does NOT increase immunity gain speed. Rather, it SLOWS DOWN the rate at which the infection progresses, giving your colonists a bigger window for gaining that immunity.
With mechanites it does not speed up time until healing, but it simply inhibits the speed at which the disease progresses. At low progress, the mechanites give a 20% increase to pain and 60% increase to tiredness. At high progress (more than 50%), that goes up to 60% and 100%, respectively. Good tending slows this speed and can actually reverse it, so the tend quality is what makes your colonists’ lives a little more bearable.
Finally, with parasites, tend quality does NOTHING. Five tends and they’re cured, quality notwithstanding. So simply tend them with no medicine. Anything else is a waste.
RimWorld follows three survivors from a crashed space liner as they build a colony on a frontier world at the rim of known space. Inspired by the space western vibe of Firefly, the deep simulation of Dwarf Fortress, and the epic scale of Dune and Warhammer 40,000.

About Bjorn Strongndarm’s Let’s Play: Games are fun! But they’re more fun when you share them with others. I aim to provide mature but family-friendly commentary in a way that enhances the story that unfolds in the game. In my RimWorld gameplay commentary, I try to draw out the stories of the colonists themselves as much as possible. Having fun is more important than winning. Remember, Losing is Fun! (At least, if Done Right.)
