M.Chekhov Master Certifying Teachers Wil Kilroy and Lisa Dalton lead the first of five discussions about Mr.Chekhov's Five Guiding Principles. National Michael Chekhov Association Alumni and Certification Teachers and Candidates participate, sharing their experiences as actors, teachers and directors in how using the first guiding principle is a benefit and sometimes a challenge. Tips on strengthening one's work with the technique are shared along with the Guiding Principle's role in the renowned NMCA Pedagogy. NMCA offers training and certifications for Teachers, Directors, Actors and Designers.
The first guiding principle is: To use the PsychoPhysical Exercises as a means to awaken artistic states. Delivered from Mr. Chekhov in 1955, lectures from Mr. Chekhov in answer to questions from the Stage Society in Hollywood, CA, included this topic. A clip of Mr. Chekhov describing the first Guiding Principle is included.
Professor Wil Kilroy, Dept. Chair at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, has partnered with Lisa Dalton since 1988 as co-founders of NMCA, along with the late Mala Powers, executrix of the Chekhov Estate. Kilroy hosts the summer NMCA Chekhov Training Intensive at NMSU In June. See www.chekhov.net for information.
The central key to GP #1 is to realize artistic performance training requires the union of movement plus imagination engaging the psychology (the Thinking, Feeling and Will Forces-see for more detail https://youtu.be/wks41xycdhY).
We must commit to engaging our clarity of thought, our breadth of feelings and our grounded will forces as we move in Expanding, Contracting patterns, through the element-inspired qualities of Molding-earth, Flowing/Floating-water, Flying-air, and Radiating-Fire, Light and the Archetypal Gestures such as Pushing, Pulling, Lifting, Smashing, Gathering, Throwing, Penetrating, Tearing, Reaching and Dragging. Practice of the Stacatto-Legato 6-Directions exercise is an ideal daily practice when done with psychophysical awareness.
The value for the artist of doing POA's is discussed as a means to engaging the thinking forces of the artist to expand our awareness of the truth of the tool, as a means of activating a feel for how it expresses itself in the world, and the will to want to master the tool. P is for PRACTICING, O is for OBSERVING, A is for APPLYING the tools in triple, daily rhythm. More information on this can be found in the Michael Chekhov Playbook and at www.chekhov.net under the resources link where one can download a template for the daily POA journal. You are invited to post your POAs at the Facebook page: The National Michael Chekhov Association.
