I found out a secret that could make my frenemy steal my parents away from me
Hi, I'm Eva, and I lived in an orphanage since as far back as I could remember. It was okay I guess; I mean the nuns were kind to me, but it wasn't the same as having a proper family. I also had this constant bitterness of being abandoned, which I expressed through my moody attitude and grungy appearance.
Regardless of my mood swings, I made some good friends – but one-by-one I watched families adopt them, while I remained stuck there!
There was this one girl there called Lisa- we ended up being the only two kids stuck there into our teenage years. Because we were the same age the nuns tried to get us to be friends with each other. She was okay, but we never seemed to grow that close.
Her head was full of nonsense about her parents loving her and how they'd turn up one day and rescue her. She kept some old flower charm bracelet that they'd 'apparently' given her as a baby – when it got too small for her wrist, she got the nuns to make it into a necklace for her.
Lisa was always nice to me but I found her 'I'm so sweet' persona kinda annoying. If the nuns needed help, she'd be the first to rush over to them.
The nuns used to run a lot of these lame competitions to keep us entertained such as drawing, cooking and that sort of thing. Lisa ALWAYS won, whether it be her dumb drawing of the orphanage or her over-iced cookies.
Families didn't usually want to adopt a moody teenager, so one day when a family arrived specifically looking for an older kid, I couldn't believe my luck.
I thought I was a sure-fire pick, but then they went to talk to Lisa too.
