8 beautiful species of geese are found in India
Bar Headed Geese are found throughout the Indian Subcontinent, they generally breed in central Asia and visit South Asia during winters. They are distinguished from other geese by the bold black bars on their head. In flight they appear pale gray with broad black trailing edge to wings. Also note their orangey-yellow bill and legs.
Greater White Fronted Geese are long distance migrants and rarely seen in the West, North and North East India. They are named for the patch of white feathers bordering the base of their bill. They are a Medium-sized geese with bright orange legs and bill, white face and forehead, and black markings on their belly.
Greylag Goose is a large gray goose and a common visitor to North India in winters, found mostly in wetlands feeding generally on aquatic weeds and grasses. They are rather bulky and overall brownish gray with a big pinkish-orange bill and legs. In flight they show extensively pale gray leading edge to upperwings, rather pale underwing coverts, and a broad white tipped tail.
Kashmir Anz (Kashmir Goose) is mostly found in and around the water bodies across the valleys in Jammu & Kashmir. Their eye colour is either grey or brown. Their plumage is cinnamon, white, and a mixture of cinnamon and white. Females are smaller compared to males.
Lesser White Fronted Geese are long distance migrants and rarely seen in the North West and North East India. Their plumage is dark chocolate brown with a white forehead and bubblegum-pink bill. They have a distinct but narrow yellow eyering, and a more extensive white forehead. They are closely related to the larger white fronted geese, but are comparatively smaller and short necked.
Red Breasted Goose is a migratory bird and a globally endangered species that have been reported from Bijnore district of Uttar Pradesh. They are a small and stocky rare geese with a small bill. They have a rich rusty breast and striking rusty and black-and-white head pattern. Their white flank stripe is prominent on land and in flight.
Taiga Bean Goose breeds in northern Europe and Asia and in winters migrates to South Asia. In India, they have been reported from the North East India. They are a large, dark gray-brown geese with variable orange patch on bill and orange legs. They look similar to Tundra Bean Geese but has a longer and more sloping bill.
Tundra Bean Goose breeds in northern Siberia and in winters migrate to South Asia. In India, they are reported from North India. They are a large, dark gray-brown geese with typically small orange patch on bill, and orange legs. They look similar to Taiga Bean Geese but has a shorter and thicker bill.
