This year while tracking the pregnancies of our Female Cownose Rays, the Husbandry Staff at Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies noticed something peculiar. One particular Cownose ray had not pupped (given birth) along with the rest of the female population. The pup was retained for an extra 6-8 weeks with hopes of a natural birth. When it became clear that wasn't going to happen, we made the decision to perform a caesarian section in hopes to save both the pup, and it's mother.
The procedure could not have gone better! Both the pup, and the mother are alive and healthy!
